Yesterday I was reading a book about Kristallnacht. Kristallnacht means night of the broken glass. However, it is wrong. It actually happened over four nights and changed thousands of lives forever. Millions infact.
Over those nights, thousands of male Jews were arrested and sent to work camps, and life was never the same for those Jews. All of their property was destroyed. Stolen. Burnt.
The Jews were not seen as human. They were treated worse than rats. Simply because of what they believed in. And because one man disagreed with them.
I remember going to a Holocaust memorial centre and seeing a picture. I can’t find this picture anywhere. But basically it is of Jews trying to tidy up the mess that was left for them, and Germans just walking past. Ignoring it. Not bothered that their neighbour was struggling. In fact, they were probably the cause of it. I’ve not been able to find this photo on the internet but it was very touching.
What bothers me is, that these people are human. The people who did all the damage were human, as were the victims. As are we. If humans were capable of such damage and hurt then, then we still are now. And these people weren’t even like, evil people. They were the normal neighbourhood who had been forced to believe bad stuff about Jews. Stuff that obviously wasn’t true.
What if it happens again? What if people are brainwashed to believe awful stuff about other races? How can we stop that from happening? Isn’t it already happening with BNP/UKIP?
As Christians we are called to love everyone, no matter what their race, background, beliefs, sexuality. Yet so many of us still have trouble accepting everyone into our community. Sometimes simply because they don’t look right, or can’t articulate themselves correctly. Each time we exclude someone, we are moving one step further forward towards another Holocaust. We are discriminating someone. Now, its pretty unbelievable that soemthing like this could ever happen again. But it can, and is happening in Rowanda etc. It is happening in the UK with racist parties, and other groups that don’t include everyone.
Matthew 5:43-48 says
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[k] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies. Pray for those who treat you badly. 45 If you do this, you will be children who are truly like your Father in heaven. He lets the sun rise for all people, whether they are good or bad. He sends rain to those who do right and to those who do wrong. 46 If you love only those who love you, why should you get a reward for that? Even the tax collectors do that. 47 And if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than anyone else. Even the people who don’t know God are nice to their friends. 48 What I am saying is that you must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
